Tips For Becoming Career Ready
1. Know yourself - what makes you unique? Try to make time to think about what your values are. There are values inventories you can access online to help you pin these down. These values will be those attitudes you have that will ultimately shape the areas that you will explore as possible career options in the future.
2. Know your demographic. Do you plan on staying in Tasmania? Or are you going to look for employment further afield? If you wish to stay here because you value family or lifestyle, this will impact your career choices. Which industries will most likely be strong here? - more on that later.
3. Know what employers are looking for. Do you know about the Core Skills For Work? These are key because employers want to have job-ready employees who will work, can work and will get on well in the work environment. Many school-based activities are designed to improve your core skills for work. Such things as group work tasks, public speaking, class presentations, group collaborations on documents are all enhancing your skills for the workplace.
4. Look for opportunities to learn by volunteerism. If you want to gain skills in the workforce, become a volunteer. By taking an active role as a volunteer you are developing your core skills. A willing volunteer sends an important signal to a future employer - this person is keen to work! Think of the skills you develop along the way and if you can, record these skills and experiences for future reference on a resume.
5. Research. Find 20 minutes of your week to research careers options. By arming yourself with information and know-how you will stay ahead of the pack when it comes to career decision making.
